4.64 LAKH PERSONS BECOME SELF EMPLOYED UNDER SWARNA JAYANTI SHAHARI ROZGAR YOJANA


Over 4.64 lakh persons living below poverty line are now gainfully employed in self-employment ventures under the Swarna Jayanti Shahari Rozgar Yojana (SJSRY). Besides, over 4.65 lakh persons have been given training in various skills to earn their living. The scheme being implemented by the Ministry of Urban Development &Poverty Alleviation is funded in the ratio of 75:25 between the Center and States. Since inception of the scheme to 2002-03 a sum of Rs. 600.22 crore has been released to the States and Union Territories. During the current year (2003-04) Government has tentatively allocated an amount of Rs. 100.74 crore for the scheme.

The scheme has also been designed to help groups of urban poor women taking up self-employment ventures. So far 27515 such groups have been formed and 64300 women beneficiaries assisted under the scheme. Under another component of SJSRY which provides wage employment to people living below poverty line within the jurisdiction of urban local bodies, 434.70 lakh mandays of work was generated.
