QUICK ESTIMATES OF INDEX OF INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION AND USE-BASED INDEX (BASE 1993-94=100) FOR THE MONTH OF AUGUST, 2003


The Quick Estimates of Index of Industrial Production (IIP) with base 1993-94 for the month of August 2003 have been released by the Central Statistical Organisation. The General Index stands at 181.2 which is higher by 5.2% as compared to the month of August 2002.

2. The Indices of Industrial Production for the Mining, Manufacturing and Electricity sectors for the month of August 2003 stand at 137.6, 188.9, and 166.3 respectively, with the corresponding growths of 2.5%, 6.0% and 0.9% as compared to August 2002. The cumulative growths during April-August, 2003-04 over the corresponding period of 2002-03 in the three sectors have been 4.4%, 6.2% and 2.4% respectively, with the overall growth in the General Index being 5.6%.

3. Alongwith the Quick Estimates of IIP for August 2003, the indices for July 2003 have undergone the first revision and those for May 2003, the second (final) revision in the light of the updated data received from the source agencies. There are no significant revisions in the indices for May 2003 and July 2003.

4. As many as 11 of the 17 two-digit industry groups have shown positive growth during the month of August 2003 as compared to the corresponding month of the previous year. Paper & Paper Products and Printing, Publishing & Allied Industries have shown the highest growth of 34.0%, followed by 20.9% in Wood and Wood products; Furniture and Fixtures as well as Beverages, Tobacco and Related Products and 18.4% in Transport Equipment and Parts. On the other hand, Leather and Leather and Fur Products have shown a negative growth of 20.3% followed by a decline of 14.6% in Jute and Other Vegetables Fibre Textiles (except cotton) and 8.4% in Cotton Textiles.

5. As per Use-based classification, the growth in August 2003 over August 2002 is 4.0% in Basic goods, 6.3% in Capital goods and 4.1% in Intermediate goods. The Consumer durables and Consumer non-durables have recorded growth of 3.9% and 8.6% respectively, with the overall growth in Consumer goods being 7.4%.

6. Statements giving Quick Estimates of the Index of Industrial Production at Sectoral, 2-digit level of National Industrial Classification (NIC)-1987 and by Use-based classification for the month of August 2003, along with the growth rates over the corresponding month of previous year, including the cumulative indices and growth rates, are enclosed.
