CONSUMER PRICE INDEX FOR URBAN NON-MANUAL EMPLOYEES FOR OCTOBER 2003 (BASE 1984-85=100)


The All-India Consumer Price Index for Urban Non-Manual Employees [CPI (UNME)], on base 1984-85=100, for the month of October 2003 has been released by the Central Statistical Organisation (CSO), Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation; together with the indices for 59 selected urban centres in India. The All-India CPI (UNME) for October 2003 is 423, which is 3 points more than the index for the month of September 2003. At the major group level, the index in October 2003 when compared to last month that is September 2003 has increased by 1.22% in the case of "Food, Beverages and Tobacco". At the sub-group level, the index for "Vegetables" has increased by 6.74% whereas the index for "Pulses" has increased by 2.63%. With the corresponding All-India index for October 2002 being 408, the index for the month of October, 2003 has shown a rise of 3.7% over a year.

The average index for the period April 2003 to October 2003 works out to 418, which is higher by 3.5% over the average index of 404 for the corresponding period of the previous year. Statement-1 gives the CPI (UNME) for All-India, and 59 selected urban centres in the country, for October 2003; together with the indices for the preceding five months. The CPI (UNME) for October 2003 in respect of four metropolitan cities of India, together with the corresponding indices for the previous month and also for October 2002 are given below:-

Statement-2 gives a comparison of CPI(UNME) for October, 2003 in respect of 59 selected urban centres, with the indices for the corresponding month of last year, namely October, 2002. Percentage change in the index is shown in the last column. From the statement, it may be noted that the variation in the index for various centres ranges from 0.7 to 10.9 %; with the largest increase being in the case of Chandigarh and the least in the case of Bhavnagar. The increases are 0.0 to 2.0 % for 12 centres, 2.1 to 4.0 % for 27 centres, 4.1 to 6.0 % for 15 centres, 6.1 to 8.0 % for 4 centres and more than 8.1 % for 1 centre. As many as 32 centres have lower annual percentage increase as compared to that of the All-India figure of 3.7 % while 26 centres have recorded a higher percentage increase as compared to the All-India average, whereas one centre has recorded the same percentage increase as that of All India average.
