CREATE AWARENESS TO INCREASE CONSUMPTION OF ALUMINIUM-SHRI BAIS

Union Minister for Mines Shri Ramesh Bais has advised Aluminium Association of India and its members, Bharat Aluminium Company(BALCO), National Aluminium Company(NALCO), Hindustan Aluminium Company(HINDALCO), Jawaharlal National Aluminium Research, Development and Design Centre(JNARDDC) and the secondary producers of aluminium to create awareness in the concerned ministries, departments, automobile industries and infrastructure sector to use more aluminium. He assured that mines Ministry would lend its full support to this plan of action. While he agreed that aluminium production should be augmented, he observed that unless the per capita consumption of aluminum is increased, more production will only be counter yielding. He was briefed by the above organisations that per capita consumption in India was as low as 0.5 kg against 2.9 kg in China.

The Minister asked these organisations to give wide presentations and create a mind-set to use more aluminium in construction, automobile, rail wagon and ship building, power and transmission sectors. He desired that a national compaign should be launched to popularise use of aluminum in rural and urban house-hold materials. Experts from Aluminium Industry briefed that it would be a potential sector for growth and Government should take steps to increase consumption and revise the duty structure, so that downstream and end product producers get benefited. This would lead to desired growth in consumption.

The Secretary, Mines Dr. A.K. Kundra and senior officials of the Ministry and Aluminium Sector attended the meeting.
