RAILWAY FREIGHT EXCEEDS TARGET IN JANUARY 2003


The Railways transported 45.91 million tones of core sector revenue earning freight during January 2003 as against the target of 45.75 million tones, thus, exceeding the target by 0.16 million tonnes. This was 0.90 million tones higher as compared to the corresponding month of the last year.

Of the total revenue earning traffic, 20.74 million tones (MT) was coal, 3.80 MT raw material for steel plants, 1.25 MT pig iron and finished steel, 1.62 MT iron ore for exports, 3.91 MT cement, 3.95 MT foodgrains, 2.07 MT fertilizers, 2.85 MT Petroleum, Oil and Lubricant (POL) and 5.72 MT other goods.

The revenue earning freight traffic in terms of Net Tonne Kilometres (NKTMs) was 30.68 NTKMs, recording an increase of 2.31 per cent over the target of 29.98 NTKMs for the month.

The traffic measured in Net Tonne Kilometre per wagon per day on Broad Gauge was 2363 NTKM.
