FACILITIES TO THE TRIBALS OF ANDAMAN AND NICOBAR ISLANDS

The Ministry of Tribal Affairs implements various schemes/programmes for the welfare and development of tribals in all the States/UTs, including the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. These Schemes do not provide for any extra facilities to the tribals of Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

As per the Constitution (Andaman & Nicobar Islands) Scheduled Tribes Order, 1959, the following communities have been notified as Scheduled tribes: Andanese, Chariar, Chari, Koa, Tabo, Bo, Yere, Kede, Bea, Balawa, Bojigiyab, Juwai, Kol, Jarawas, Nicobarese, Onges, Sentinelese and Shompens.

No Community is specified as a Scheduled Caste in the Andaman and Nicobar islands as per the Constitution (Scheduled Castes) (Union Territories) Order, 1951.

This information was given by the Union Minister for Tribal Affairs, Shri Jual Oram in a written reply to a question from Shri A. C. Jose in the Lok Sabha today.
