RAJYA SABHA
There has been an
increase in Naxalite activities in the States of Jharkhand,
Chhattisgarh and Orissa, which have a fairly large population
of tribals. In these three States 492 incidents of Naxalite
violence took place during the current financial year (upto
October 31) as against 362 reported in the corresponding period
last year.
No specific study
has been conducted by the Ministry on this issue. However, the
widespread social, economic and regional inequities prevalent
in these States. Besides, poverty, unemployment and displacement
of the tribals from their habitat remain the basic causes for
the continuance and spatial expansion of Naxalite activities.
This information
was given by the Union Minister for Tribal Affairs, Shri Jual
Oram in a written reply to a question from Dr. Manmohan Singh
in the Rajya Sabha today.
