MODERNISATION OF RAIL BRIDGE
MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
Indian Railways have
begun modernization of bridge management system in association
with leading specialist agencies with emphasis on use of non-destructive
testing equipment.
Innovative and modern
technologies for faster rehabilitation of bridges, such as, Helifix
grouted steel anchors are being introduced which do not require
any speed restriction.
Besides, funds for
rehabilitation of bridges have been increased from an annual average
of Rs. 59 crores prior to creation of Special Railway Safety Fund
(SRSF) in 2001 to Rs. 310 crores in the current financial year
2003-2004.
The Railways have
1,20,000 bridges, out of which, 51,000 bridges are of Nineteenth
Century vintage. About 527 bridges are distressed as on April
1, 2002. About 310 distressed bridges have been rehabilitated
as on April 1, 2003. The remaining distressed bridges will be
rehabilitated soon.
The rehabilitation
of distressed rail bridges has become faster now with increased
allocation of funds after setting up of non-lapsable SRSF of Rs.
17,000 crores with effect from November 1, 2001.
