IMPROVING SAFETY ON RAILWAYS THROUGH SIGNALLING AND TELECOMMUNICATION

Indian Railways have embarked upon massive improvement in signalling and telecommunication front. Provision of optical fibre cables on its network will bring about revolutionary changes in the telecommunication facility of railways.

The latest technologies adopted by railways in the signalling and telecommunication segment are providing excellent and economical solutions for improved and safe train operations, as well as better customer care.

Colour signalling, centralized operations of points & signals, automatic block signalling , route relay inter-locking, replacing overhead wire communication with underground cables and optical fibre cables, provision of microwave systems and installation of railways’ own telephone exchange are some of the important steps initiated in the signalling and telecommunication field of Indian Railways during the last few years.

Signalling and telecommunication system play a vital role in safe operation of trains and information dissemination for railway passengers. In today’s scenario of acute resource crunch, increasing utilization and output of the existing infrastructure by adoption of newer workable and reliable technologies is the key to success for Indian Railways.
