LOADING AND UNLOADING TONNAGE CAPACITY OF MAJOR PORTS

All the major ports
can handle 10,000 Dead Weight Tonnage (DWT) Ships and the capacity
of major ports was worked out on yearly basis which as on March
31, 2003 was 363 Million Tonnes for all major ports. This was
stated by Shri Dilipkumar Mansukhlal Gandhi, Minister of State
in the Ministry of Shipping in a written reply to Shri Brahma
Nand Mandal in Lok Sabha today. For another question the Minister
said that the loading and unloading rate of tonnage depends on
factors like type of vessel, parcel size of vessel, cargo handled
etc. and differs from port to port. The total tonnage handled
by all the Major Ports during the last two years was 313.45 million
tonnes in 2002-03 and 287.58 million tonnes in 2001-02. The Port-wise
details are as under:-
