LOSSES IN PSUs
RAJYA SABHA
As per information
available till 31.3.2002, 61 public sector undertakings were continuously
running in losses for the last 5 years. Their total accumulated
loss was about Rs.56831 crore as on 31.3.2002, till which period
the information is available.
As on 31.3.2002,
there were 42 loss making central public sector undertakings whose
accumulated losses have exceeded the investment made therein.
The Government policy
towards such public sector undertakings was announced in the Budget
speech of 2000-01, which inter-alia includes to bring down Government
equity in non-strategic PSEs to 26 per cent or lower, if necessary;
to restructure and revive potentially viable PSEs; to close down
the PSEs which cannot be revived and to protect the interests
of workers.
This information
was given in the Rajya Sabha today by Shri Subodh Mohite, Minister
of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises in a written reply
to a question by Shri Lajpat Rai and Shri Rajiv Ranjan Singh 'Lalan'.
