MODERNISATION OF RAILWAY BRIDGES

As a new initiative,
Special Railway Safety Fund (SRSF) was created during the year
2001 for repair/rehabilitation of old assets. Out of Rs. 17,000
crores allocated for the purpose, Rs. 1530 crores have been earmarked
for repair/rehabilitation of Railway Bridges. During the period
2001-2002 and 2002-2003, 776 bridges have been rehabilitated/rebuilt
to suit present standards and an amount of approximately Rs. 195
crores have been spent. During the year 2003-2004, an amount of
Rs. 217 crores have been allocated and 571 bridges are targeted.
This information
was given by the Minister of State for Railways Shri Bandaru Dattatraya
in a written reply to a question from Shri Padam Sen Choudhry
in the Lok Sabha today.
