INDIAN TEAM TO VISIT US NUCLEAR
REGULATORY COMMISSION
A team from the Atomic
Energy Regulatory Board of India is to visit shortly the United
States Nuclear Regulatory Commission for discussions on nuclear
safety. This is part of the ongoing dialogue on nuclear safeguards
between the two sides when they exchange their experiences on
the crucial issue, as well as discuss more effective methods of
containing radiation leaks and allied subjects. The six member
Indian team is headed by the Vice Chairman of the Atomic Energy
Regulatory Board, Shri S.K.Sharma.
Issues such as licence
renewal, periodical safety review, design modifications and retrofits
and emergency operating procedures will also figure during the
dialogue. The Indian team will also visit a nuclear power plant
and some safety research laboratories in the United States.
The atomic power
stations in India maintain an excellent record of safety performance.
The radioactive releases into the environment are very much below
the prescribed limits. The Emergency preparedness systems at the
nuclear power plants are kept updated.
India is a designated
member of the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy
Agency (IAEA) since its inception and takes active part in the
programmes of the Agency including nuclear safety.
