HYDROGEN ENERGY MEET

A meeting on Hydrogen Energy in India – Status and Prospects in the 21st Century will be held in Planning Commission tomorrow. Shri M. Kannappan, Minister of State for Non-conventional Energy Sources, will participate in the meeting. Other concerned Ministries and organisations including Principal Scientific Advisors, Government of India; Department of Science & Technology; Department of Scientific and Industrial Research; IIT Delhi and other experts are expected to participate in the meeting.

The Ministry of Non-conventional Energy Sources (MNES) is arranging an exhibition on various new products and devices developed as a result of the ongoing R&D programme in the area of Hydrogen Energy and Fuel Cells taken up by MNES. These include hydrogen driven motorcycles, hydrogen gensets, micro fuel cells, fuel cell stacks for running UPS and other fuel cell devices. MNES is making a presentation in this meeting which will bring out the importance of hydrogen energy as a new sustainable energy resource, achievements in India, directions and outline of a National Hydrogen Energy Roadmap in the country.

Hydrogen energy has assumed widespread importance in the world today and many developed countries have embarked on large scale programme for tapping hydrogen energy which is being called the Freedom Fuel and is considered to be a sustainable alternative to the present fossil fuel based economy. MNES has been supporting various research, development and demonstration projects on hydrogen and fuel cells at various scientific and educational institutions, including CSIR laboratories and universities. With MNES support innovative material and techniques have been developed and demonstrated for storing hydrogen, especially for vehicular applications (two-wheelers), power generating units and catalytic burners for domestic and industrial applications.
