FOODGRAINS STOCK SUFFICIENT FOR PDS AND EXPORT: SHRI YADAV

India’s foodgrains stock is sufficient to meet the requirement of public distribution system and exports, said Shri Sharad Yadav, Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution.Releasing a compilation of proceedings of the second International Wheat Seminar on "wheat and wheat products—global perspectives" here today, the minister said that a need was felt to release stocks of foodgrains for exports also after meeting the requirement of PDS and other welfare schemes.

India exports wheat and wheat products to 30 countries and rice to 47 countries mostly in Asia and Africa, Shri Yadav said. The country could do still better by highlighting the quality of Indian wheat for their various end uses by providing the scientific data to international buyers and by adopting better marketing techniques, he pointed out. The Minister also expressed the hope that the recommendations of the seminar would go a long way in promoting the use of wheat and wheat products in the country and the world.

The two-day International Wheat Seminar was held in September 2002 at Hyderabad by Wheat Products Promotion Society along with Roller Flour Millers Federation of India, The Roller Flour Mills Association, All India Bread Manufacturers’ Association, Society of Indian Bakers and U.S. Wheat Associates. The Seminar was also co-sponsored by about 20 organisations including various ministries public and private sector organisations, manufacturing units and trade and technical organisations from India and abroad. Besides domestic, delegations from Italy, Switzerland, Canada, Germany, Australia, Japan and USA also participated in this Seminar.
