Non-Governmant Organisations (NGOs) have been blacklisted by
the Centre so far for their non-satisfactory performance. This
was stated by the Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Dr.
Satyanarayan Jatiya during Question Hour in the Rajya Sabha
today. Replying to supplementaries, the Minister said the state
governments are asked from time to time to check the performance
of the NGOs receiving central grant for the welfare and empowerment
of the marginalised sections of society. Dr. Jatiya said that
a Committee headed by the Secretary in the Ministry of Social
Justice and Empowerment has been set up to suggest ways and
means to further strengthen the system of checking of NGOs.
In
reply to main question Dr. Jatiy said that the number of NGOs
receiving assistance from the Social Justice and Empowerment
Ministry was 1961 during 2000-01, 2665 during 2001-02 and 2375
during the current year so far. They received Rs. 161.65 crore,
Rs.190.20 crore and Rs. 185.63 crore respectively.
