Centre has reconstituted
the National Commission of Minorities with immediate effect.
According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Social
Justice & Empowerment here, Shri Tarlochan Singh has been
appointed as the Chairperson and Dr. M.S. Usmani as the Vice-Chairperson
of the seven-member Commission. The other Members of the Commission
are Ven. Bhante Arya Nagarjuna Surei Sasai, Shri V.V. Augustine,
Lt. Gen. (Retd) A.M. Sethna, Shri Ahmed Rashid Sherwani and
Shrimati K. Santhaa Reddy.
Shri Tarlochan
Singh has been the Vice-Chairperson of the outgoing Commission
the term of which ended on January 23, 2003. He has a vast administrative
experience having served in various capacities in Punjab and
Central governments. Dr. Usmani, an eminent Unani Physician,
is a Member of several Committees of the Union Health Ministry
and various autonomous institutions of repute. Ven. Surei Sasi
is a renowned Buddhist monk and founder of Dharmasena. Shri
Augustine is the State President of the Minority Morcha, Kerala.
Lt. Gen. (Retd) Sethna is the President of the Delhi Parsi Anjuman
and Vice-President of the Federation of the Parsi Zoroastrian
Anjumans of India. Shri Sherwani, an industrialist, is involved
in promoting education among Muslims. Shrimati Santhaa Reddy
is a Member of the National Commission for Women.
