INFILTRATION IN J&K

LOK SABHA

The infiltration level along the Jammu and Kashmir level continued to remain as high as in the previous years. The Army proposed to retain several forward posts along the Line of Control during the winter months in its attempt to choke infiltration. The infiltration level continued to remain as high as in the previous years.

In 2003 till date, a total of 104 infiltration attempts have been foiled in which 269 terrorists have been killed and a large number forced to abandon infiltration. It is, however assessed that approximately 1000 terrorists may have entered into India during the current year.

Adequate military measures have been taken to intercept and eliminate terrorist groups attempting to infiltrate in J&K. The counter measures include surveillance of all known routes of infiltration, including deployment of unattended ground sensors, construction of fence along the Line of Control and multi-tiered deployment of troops. The counter infiltration posture is constantly being reviewed based on intelligence inputs. Notwithstanding, these measures, the prevailing terrain configuration and climatic conditions, make it extremely difficult to completely seal the LoC.

All necessary arrangements for Army's stay during winter months have been made. The posts on Line of control have been adequately stocked and equipped to continue with their present posture of deployment.

This information was given by the Defence Minister Shri George Fernandes in a written reply Shri YV Rao in Lok Sabha today.
