SCHOLARSHIP SCHEME FOR SC
/ ST STUDENTS
BACKGROUNDER
More than 153 crore
rupees were released for the Post-matric Scholarship Scheme for
students belonging to Scheduled Castes Communities during 2002-03.
The scholarship amount
to SC students varies from Rs. 425/ per month for hostlers to
Rs. 190 per month for day scholars in case of degree and postgraduate
level professional courses. For diploma level professional and
technical courses the monthly rate varies from Rs. 290 for hostlers
to Rs.190 per month for day scholars. In case of general courses
upto graduate level (second year and onwards) the rates vary between
Rs. 230 to Rs. 120 per month. For classes 11th and
12th the scholarship amount range is Rs. 150 per month
to hostler and Rs.90 per month to day scholars. In addition the
scheme provides for reimbursement of compulsory non-refundable
fee charged by the Institution, study tour charges up to Rs. 500
annum to students pursuing professional and technical courses
etc.
The post matric scholarship
for SC students was launched as a Central sponsored scheme in
1944. It was extended to scheduled tribes in 1948-49.
As per records available
in the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment the maintenance
allowance, after first revision in 1954, varied from Rs. 27 per
month for day scholars and Rs. 40 per month for hostlers for under
graduate course to Rs. 60 per month for day scholars and Rs.75
for hostlers in professional degree courses in Engineering and
Medicine
