GOVERNMENT COMMITTED TO CHECK DOPING: VIKRAM VERMA

The Minister for Youth Affairs & Sports, Shri Vikram Verma said that Government is fully alive to the issue of Doping in Sports and is committed to check it . Action is being taken by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) against the Federations as well as the Players who tested positive at the National Games at Hyderabad.

In the case of National Games, he clarified that the State-level teams which take part in the Nationals are constituted by the various Federations under the respective State Olympic Association. These teams are selected and cleared by the State level Association itself. Hence State Federations and Association should be more stringent in their approach to check this problem.

The results of Dope testing has lent credit to the Sports Authority of India Lab which has undertaken these tests. Referring to Asian Games; he said that the credibility of our testing was established when our results proved right in the case of Athlete Sunita Rani.

As a major step; the country is soon going to have a Doping Lab of International Standard. In a milestone development, the 1st stage of ISO 9001 certification has already been achieved. The 2nd stage of 17025 certification is under processing. The Equipment in the Lab has already been installed and the Infrastructure is equivalent to the International Specifications. Securing the 17025 certification will pave the way for the establishment of International Doping Lab in the Country.

He reiterated the assurance of Govt’s seriousness on the matter and assured that necessary actions are being taken.
