QUICK ESTIMATES OF INDEX OF INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION AND USE-BASED INDEX (BASE 1993-94=100) FOR FEBRUARY, 2003


The Quick Estimates of Index of Industrial Production (IIP) with base 1993-94 for the month of February 2003 have been released by the Central Statistical Organisation. The General Index stands at 181.2 which is higher by 6.4% as compared to the month of February 2002.

The Indices of Industrial Production for the Mining, Manufacturing and Electricity sectors for the month of February 2003 stand at 140.0, 190.5, and 151.5 respectively, with the corresponding growths of 7.2%, 6.5% and 0.1% as compared to February 2002. The cumulative growth in the three sectors during April-February, 2002-03 over the corresponding period of 2001-02 has been 5.7%, 5.8% and 3.5%, respectively. The overall growth in the General Index during this period has been 5.7%.

Alongwith the Quick Estimates of IIP for February 2003, the indices for January 2003 have undergone the first revision and those for November 2002, the second (final) revision in the light of the updated data received from the source agencies. There are no significant revisions in the indices for November 2002 and January 2003.

As many as 14 of the 17 two-digit industry groups have shown positive growth during the month of February 2003 as compared to the corresponding month of the previous year. Beverages, Tobacco and Related Products have shown the highest growth of 36.7%, followed by 17.3% in Textile Products (including Wearing Apparel) and 17.2% in Leather and Leather & Fur Products. On the other hand, Cotton Textiles have shown a negative growth of 8.4% followed by a decline of 6.0% in Wood and Wood Products; Furniture and Fixtures and 2.4% in Other Manufacturing Industries

As per Use-based classification, the growth in February 2003 over February 2002 is 4.9% in Basic goods, 9.9% in Capital goods and 5.9% in Intermediate goods. The Consumer durables and Consumer non-durables have recorded growth of (-) 9.4% and 11.1% respectively, with the overall growth in Consumer goods being 6.1%.

Statements giving Quick Estimates of the Index of Industrial Production at Sectoral, 2-digit level of National Industrial Classification (NIC)-1987 and by Use-based classification for the month of February 2003, along with the growth rates over the corresponding month of previous year, including the cumulative indices and growth rates, are enclosed.
