ECONOMISING OPERATING EXPENSES ON
RAILWAYS
The Ministry
of Railways is contemplating to form a joint venture company with
National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) for setting up of 1000
Mega Watt (MW) captive Thermal Power Plant at Nabinagar to meet
Railways power requirement to reduce in its energy bill. Necessary
formalities in this regard is being worked out.
At present, State
Electricity Boards (SEBs) charge commercial rate from Indian Railways
for its electric traction, thus, making it a high cost economy
for the railways.
Under a scheme
presently in vogue, the Railways obtain direct power supply from
NTPC at Dadri and Auriaya resulting into annual recurring savings
of over Rs. 70 crores.
