USAGE OF ALUMINIUM - HOW INDIA FARES
BACKGROUDER
Aluminium is the
youngest of all metals. Its production started just after a century
back. But its growth has been phenomenal and the world production
has gone up from a mere 13 tonnes in 1986 to the current level
of over 20 million tonnes. The demand is growing both in the developed
and developing countries, with an average per capita consumption
of about 25 kg. in the industrialised countries. Expanding applications
of aluminium offers limitless growth of the industry in the coming
year. The Indian aluminium industry is more than 60 years old.
The aluminium scenario in the country got a boost when geologists
discovered in 1995 one of wrold's largest bauxite deposits estimated
at 1000 million tonnes in Orissa and Andhra Pradesh. India, at
present, with its total deposits of 2900 million tonnes ranks
5th in the world, next only to Australia, Guinea, Brazil
and Jamaica.
