COMPUTERIZATION OF
SUBORDINATE COURTS
The Centre has
released a sum of Rs. 4.92 crore to the States and Union Territories
for computerization of subordinate courts under the Centrally
Sponsored Scheme for the development of infrastructural facilities
for the judiciary during the current financial year 2002-2003.
Under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme, the States are required
to share the matching expenditure on the basis of 50:50 between
the Centre and the States.
A total of 428
subordinate courts in 428 districts all over the country are to
be computerized. Of this, 23 district courts will be computerized
in Andhra Pradesh followed by 20 in Assam, 41 in Bihar and Jharkhand,
18 in Gujarat, 16 in Haryana, 13 in Jammu & Kashmir, 2 in
Goa, 20 in Karnataka, 14 in Kerala, 28 in Maharashtra, 45 in Madhya
Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, 22 in Orissa, 15 in Punjab, 30 in Rajasthan,
4 in Sikkim, 23 in Tamil Nadu, 3 in Tripura, 18 in West Bengal,
63 in Uttar Pradesh and Uttaranchal, 10 in Himachal Pradesh and
1 each in Chandigarh and Delhi.
During 2001-
2002, the Centre sanctioned the centrally funded pilot project
of computerization and networking of city courts in the four metropolitan
cities of Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata to serve as a model
for the States. This project is fully funded by the Central Government
and estimated to cost Rs. 14.9 crore.
