BSP MEETS RLY’S ADDITIONAL
RAIL REQUIREMENT
The Rail and
Structural Mill of Bhilai Steel Plant of the Steel Authority of
India Ltd. (SAIL), a public sector undertaking under the Steel
Ministry has started additional production of 6000 tonnes of prime
rails since September 2002 to meet the Railway’s special order
for more 40,000 tonnes. The Railways has been convinced on the
quality of Bhilai rails and plant’s capability to meet increased
volume requirement of Prime UTS-90 rails. The plant is all geared
up to despatch prime rails at the rate of 60,000 tonnes per month
to meet the additional requirement following the commissioning
of 6.5 lakh tonnes rail finishing complex.
BSP has been supplying
its prime UTS-90 rails with <2ppm hydrogen content since April
1, 2002. This is less than the level of 2.5 ppm desired by the
Railways, making BSP the only Indian steel plant and the second
in the world to meet this important international quality commitment.
Successful trial runs have been conducted in the Rail Mill’s new
descaling unit for the Railways’ new technical specifications.
