OFFTAKE OF FOODGRAINS DURING SEPTEMBER, 2002


The offtake of rice and wheat during the month of September under all schemes including TPDS(Targeted Public Distribution System) was 18.67 lakh tonnes of rice and 19.39 lakh tonnes of wheat.

The offtake of rice and wheat from the central pool during the current financial year 2002 03(April to September, 2002) was 223.43 lakh tonnes as against 114.4 lakh tonnes during the corresponding period of 2001-2002. This is an increase of 109.03 lakh tonnes or 95.30%.


Rice exports commenced in November, 2000. As on October 28, 2002, 74.28 lakh tonnes of rice has been paid for by exporters and 62.50 lakh tonne of rice has been physically lifted for the purpose. As far as wheat export is concerned, as on October 29, 97.91 lakh tonnes of wheat has been paid for and 92.34 lakh tonnes has been lifted.


The production of sugar during the current sugar season 2001-02 was 181.39 lakh tonnes (provisional) as on September 30, 2002. According to information available with the Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics during the current financial year 2002-03, upto July, 2002; a quantity of about 3.48 lakh tonnes of sugar (provisional) valued at Rs.390.89 crore has been exported. During August & September, 2002, the sugar exports were 2.08 lakh tonnes making the cumulative export of sugar upto September, 2002 in the current financial year touch 5.56 lakh tonnes.
