The Task Force on IT for Power Sector set up earlier this year presented its report to the Power Minister, Shri Anant G. Geete here today. The Committee was headed by Shri Nandan M. Nilekani.. Speaking on the occasion, the Minister said that demand for power has a outstripped supply in spite of new capacity being added. Financial losses of State Electricity Boards (SEBs) reached to Rs.33,000 crore last year due to power theft and inability to bill and collect. The T&D losses are in the vicinity of 25 per cent, a very high level by any standard he added Indirect calculations showed them to be in the range of 50 per cent. Therefore, the need of the hour is institutionalise the changes and bring about sustainable, pervasive improvements. Enabling the core business operation at the transaction level using information system would lay the foundation for sustainable reform in the sector. IT would become a key enabler of the initiatives under the reform process.
