Three officials of the US Embassy in India and
an American boy were rescued by Indian Army Rafters at Shivpuri
on 04 Nov 2002. The Americans were rafting in a commercially hired
raft in the Ganges, while negotiating a rapid their raft flipped
and the rafters were thrown overboard into the river.
As the American were swept away in the icy
cold current in the Ganges, Hav Raghu P of Indian Army with total
disregard to his personal safety jumped from his raft and pulled
out a small boy, William Pyatt, to safety. Meanwhile, other rafters
lead by Capt Vishal Ahlawat and Maj Sharif Mizanur Rehman rescued
the other victims. All four Americans i.e., Matt Lowe, Geoffrey,
William and Eden White were rescued in a quick but daring mission.
This swift action by army men with utter
disregard to their personal safety saved four precious lives.
The rescued US Embassy personnel expressed overwhelming gratitude
to army men for saving their lives. They have sent a letter of
appreciation to the Director Army Adventure Wing.
