RAJIV GANDHI NATIONAL QUALITY AWARDS, 2001

`BEST OF ALL' AWARD TO BIRLA CELLULOSIC, BHARUCH


Birla Cellulosic, Bharuch bagged the Rajiv Gandhi National Quality Award, 2001 under the "Best of All" category. The quality award for large scale manufacturing industry was given jointly to J. K. Tyre, Kankroli and Reliance Industries Limited (Hazira Manufacturing Division) Surat. Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. ( Kandla-Bhatinda Pipeline) won the Rajiv Gandhi National Quality Award under service sector and Chola Pumps (Private) Limited, Coimbatore was the winner in the category of Small Scale Manufacturing Industry. Those who were awarded Commendation Certificates include Shree Cement Limited, Beawar, Jindal Steel & Power Limited, Raigarh, Grasim Industries Limited, Nagda, BSES Limited, Mumbai, Tata Consultancy Services, Chennai and Coir-On Foam Products, Pollachi. The awards and commendation certificates were distributed by Shri Sharad Yadav, Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution at a function organised by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) here today.

Speaking on the occasion, Shri Sharad Yadav urged the Bureau of Indian Standards to promote consumer interest by formulating quality standards for consumer products. In this context the Minister recalled the efforts of the Bureau in testing the purity of gold by introducing gold hall-marking scheme and the issuance of 460 licenses covering more than 8.5 lakh of jewellary articles. He called upon the industry to produce good quality items to successfully compete in global market and maximise consumer satisfaction.

Shri V. Sreenivasa Prasad, Minister of State for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, who is also the Vice President of BIS emphasised the need for producing quality goods as sub-standard products besides resulting in loss of national image in the international market acted as a serious impediment in the way of efforts for increasing exports.

Shri S. Bandopadhayay, Secretary, Department of Consumer Affairs pointed out the need for safeguarding quality of products for competing in international markets in the wake of WTO agreement. The status of information technology and biotechnology has shown that quality is the basis of sustenance in the world market, he observed.

Earlier, in his welcome address, Shri Nirmal Singh, Director General, BIS expressed the hope that more and more industries would be participating for selection for awards under various categories in coming years.

The Rajiv Gandhi National Quality Awards have been designed by BIS to be in line with similar awards of advanced countries, like the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Awards, USA; Deming Prize in Japan and the European Quality Award. It is based on the Total Quality Management model. The winners are selected by the National Awards Committee chaired by the Secreatry, Department of Consumer Affairs.
