LABOUR LAWS TO BE DRASTICALLY REDUCED


The Government is working to rationalise and reduce the number of labour laws. This was disclosed by the Labour Minister Dr. Sahib Singh while talking to media persons here today. He said that there are about 200 labour laws enacted by the Centre and the States. Dr. Sahib Singh said that many of these laws have become redundant. Referring to the Report of the Second National Commission on Labour (NCL)in this regard, Dr. Sahib Singh said that the Labour Ministry is studying it in detail. He said that the action taken report on the recommendations of the Second National Commission would be presented in Parliament during the Winter Session. Prior to this, Ministry will hold consultation with all social partners including employers’ organisations and trade unions from 5th to 30th September, Dr. Sahib Singh added. He said that Members of Parliament have also been invited to send their views about reforms in labour laws. The Minister indicated that some changes are also envisaged in the Employees Provident Fund and Employees State Insurance Acts. On the issue of industrial relations Dr. Sahib Singh said that they can be considerably improved with the participation of labour in management. He said that this issues has been pending for the last 25 years. The Labour Minister said that sharing of profits with workers would give a big boost to harmonious industrial relations and also increase efficiency and productivity. This was the first public engagement of the Minister since he met with a minor road accident last month.
