COLLECTION OF TALL TAX ON NATIONAL HIGHWAYS
LOK SABHA
User fee on bridges on National Highways
is being collected since April 1 1976. The National Highways Act
was amended in 1992 to levy user fee for the use of sections of
National Highways. Notification for levy of user fee on NH-1 (Delhi-Jalandhar
section) was issued on May 22 2002.
The amount of tall collection
will vary depending on the length of National Highways on which
user fee is charged. The anticipated total collection is about
Rs.330 crore for the year 2002-2003.
The entire collection will be
spent on the repairs, maintenance and upgradation of National
Highways.
User fee is collected through
private agencies by open competitive bidding, through ex-servicemen
agencies, through short-term maintenance contract and under operation
and maintenance contract.
The toll charges are as per the
rates specified in the National Highways (Rate of Fee) Rules 1997
dated September 30 1997.
