REVISION OF INDUS WATER TREATY AGREEMENT

Government of Gujarat has submitted proposals for allocation of the waters of the Western Rivers of Indus basin to the Kutch region of Gujarat on the plea that it is a part of this Western Rivers of Indus basin to the Kutch region of Gujarat on the plea that it is a part of this basin. It has further requested that this water share of the Western Rivers be given to the Kutch region through the Eastern Rivers by extension of the existing Indira Gandhi Canal of Rajasthan.

It is not permissible to allocate Indus waters to the Kutch region of Gujarat according to the existing Indus Waters Treaty as no part of the state of Gujarat lies in the Indus basin.

Presently there is no proposal under consideration of the Government to revise the Indus Water Treaty between India and Pakistan.

This information was given by the Union Minister for Water Resources, Shri Arjun Charan Sethi in a written reply to question from Prof. Alka Balram Kshatriya and Dr. A. K. Patel in the Rajya Sabha today.
