REHABILITATION OF RAILWAY BRIDGES
The Railways have
rebuilt and rehabilitated 3617 bridges since 1999-2000. During
1990-2000, 1092 bridges were re-built followed by 649 bridges
in 2000-2001, 725 bridges in 2001-2002 and 1151 bridges in 2002-2003.
Currently, rehabilitation of about 2700 bridges is in progress
and will be completed in four years’ time.
Indian Railways have
a total of 120,000 bridges. Out of these, there are 565 important
bridges, 9792 major bridges and 1,09,627 minor bridges. Of these,
51,340 bridges are more than 100 years old including 327 important
and 3,545 major bridges. Approximately, 89,000 bridges are more
than 60 years old.
