THRUST ON RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT IN RAILWAYS
The Ministry of Railways
has begun giving more thrust to Research and Development activities.
Accordingly, Rs. 100 crores has been earmarked for Research and
Development projects during the Tenth Plan.
Sixteen important
rail projects including development of higher axle load wagon,
composite brake blocks, fibre re-inforced plastic sleepers, high
capacity parcel vans and development of 1400 horse power Diesel
Multiple Unit (DMU) have been completed by the Lucknow based Research
Design and Standards Organization (RDSO) in the recent past.
In addition,
25 important projects including improvement in Electric Multiple
Unit (EMU) bogies, studies on rail-wheel interaction system and
development of safety devices for level crossings are in progress
currently at RDSO.
