GROWTH OF CORPORATE SECTOR DURING
JUNE, 2003
During the month
of June, 2003, 2382 companies were registered in India under the
Companies Act, 1956 as against 1756 companies registered during
the corresponding month of the previous year and 2374 companies
during the previous month. Of the 2382 companies registered during
the month, 2372 companies were limited by shares. This includes
two government public ltd. Companies viz. Cauvery Neeravari Nigama
Ltd. & Indian oil Technologies Ltd. And one government private
limited company viz. Karnataka State Beverages Corporation Ltd.
The month-wise registration of new companies during 2002-03 and
2003-04 is charted below:
Besides 2372 companies
limited by shares, ten companies were registered as guarantee
companies during the month of June , 2003. The total authorised
capital of the companies limited by shares put together amounted
to Rs. 2005.7 crores. 2372 companies, limited by shares, registered
during the month consist of 101 public limited companies with
an authorised capital of Rs. 1680.2 crores and 2271 private limited
companies with an authorised capital of Rs. 325.5 crores.

The highest number
of companies, limited by shares, registered during the month were
reported from the State of Maharashtra (531) followed by the Union
Territory of Delhi (464) The States of Tamilnadu (205), West Bengal
(185), Andhra Pradesh (185), Karnataka (145) & Gujarat (107)
also reported comparatively larger number of companies registered
during the month. These 7
States together accounted
for nearly 78 % per cent of the total number of companies registered
during the month.
The analysis of new
registration by broad Industrial Classification during the month
brings out that the highest number of companies were registered
under the Industrial Classification " Manufacturing"( 785) followed
by "Financing, Insurance, Real Estate and Business Services" (645)
and "Wholesale and Retail trade, Restaurants & Hotels" (434).
The other Classification along with number of companies registered
are Construction (212), Transport, Storage and Communication (124),
Community Social and Personal Services (118), Agriculture &Allied
Activities (45) and Mining & Quarrying (9).
Of the Non- Government
companies, one hundred and fifty four each with authorised capital
of Rs.50 lakhs or above, were registered during the month of June
, 2003 as against 181 in the previous month and 111 in June, 2002.
Eighty-two companies
have reportedly ceased functioning during June, 2003 either by
going into liquidation or their names having been struck off under
section 560 of the Companies Act. The number of such companies
in the previous month was 72. Out of 82 such companies 22 were
Public Limited companies and 60 were Private Limited. Of these
companies 30 belonged to J & K, 25 to Tamil Nadu, 12 to Delhi,
8 to West Bengal, 4 to Gujarat, 2 to Haryana and 1 to Kranataka.
Broad Industrial Classification wise, out of 82 companies, 27
belonged to Finance, Insurance Real estate & Business services,
25 to Manufacturing, 22 to Wholesale and Retail trade, Restaurants
& Hotels, 3 to Construction, 2 each to Agriculture & Allied
Activities and Community Social and Personal Services and 1 to
Transport, storage and Communication. Taking into consideration
information relating to registration, liquidation / striking off
etc. of companies, the number of companies at work on 30.06.2003
is indicated below.
