GIVES RS. 13.79 LAKHS AS ASSISTANCE TO ANJU BOBBY GEORGE
Ms. Anju Bobby George,
who won a bronze in World Athletic Championship by jumping 6.70
metres, and who has recently been conferred Arjuna Award for the
year 2002 has become the first Indian athlete to win a medal at
the World Athletic Championships. Keeping in view her potential
in the Long Jump, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports had
released an assistance of Rs. 12 lakh from the National Sports
Development Fund (NSDF) on 8th April, 2003 for her
training in USA under Mr. Mike Powel, World record holder and
former World Champion in Long Jump. There is tremendous improvement
in her performance due to her training under Mr. Powel, sponsored
by the Government of India. She has performed well in competitions
held in Europe and has won a Bronze medal in the World Athletic
Championships held recently in France.
An additional
amount of assistance of Rs. 1,79,550/- has also been sanctioned
from the NSDF by the Ministry for World Athletics Final to be
held at Monaco from September 13-14, 2003, thereby raising the
total assistance from NSDF to Ms. Anju Bobby George to Rs. 13,79,550/-.
Ms. Anju Bobby
George is one of the medal prospects of the country for the coming
Athens Olympic Games- 2004.
