SHARAD YADAV DIRECTS BIS TO CONDUCT RAIDS AGAINST MISUSE OF ISI MARK


Shri Sharad Yadav, Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution has directed the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) to conduct nationwide raids against the spurious use of ISI Mark on various products by the manufacturers/dealers. BIS conducted raids in Delhi and Jharkhand on September 2, 2003 against manufacturing units using ISI Mark without having valid licences from BIS.

M/s Karnal Beverages, Lajpat Nagar, New Delhi was found engaged in illegal manufacturing of packaged drinking water under MCDOWELL, MINSCOT, BISLERY, PARAS and MEGA PUSHP trade marks. A large number of 20 ltr. Pet bottles with the above brand names with fake ISI Mark alongwith stickers of various brand caps, tag machine etc. were seized. The manufacturer collected empty 20 ltr. jars of reputed brands from the market, filled them with packaged drinking water and sold them in the market thereby cheating the consumer.

M/s Kohinoor Cement Company, Hazaribagh, Jharkhand was found indulged in manufacturing of spurious ISI Marks cement under brands DURGA SUPER CEMENT, LAFARCE CEMENT, MAA DURGA, ACC, CHARMINAR, K.C. SUPER, CONCERTO and LAARGEE CEMENT,etc. More than 5000 fake ISI marked cement bags were seized from the premises of the manufacturer. They were manufacturing packaged drinking water and cement without having licence from BIS, which is violation of Section 11(1) of BIS Act 1986. The offence under this Act is punishable by imprisonment upto one year and /or fine upto Rs. 5000.

The Government has brought 23 new items under compulsory certification from 17 August 2003. These items include cables, electrical switches & sockets, MCBs, energy meters, fuses, electrical irons and other appliances. BIS will take strict action against those who manufacture these items and misuse the ISI Mark without a valid licence from the Bureau. BIS appeals to the general public to give information about any misuse of ISI Mark, which comes to their notice, to the nearest BIS Office.
