MEASURES FOR PREVENTION OF FIRE IN TRAINS

The railways have been updating continuously the fire retardant properties of the materials used in coach construction so that the coach can sustain prolonged exposure to fire. Besides, fire extinguishers are provided in locomotives, guard’s compartment, pantry car, air-conditioned coaches and generator cars.

Besides, a prototype fire-proof coach has been developed and put on trial by the Rail Coach Factory, Kapurthala.

At present, a set of staff of certain categories along with a Train Superintendent has been provided on 30 long distance trains to assist passengers for safe and comfortable journey. In addition, checks are conducted against carriage of inflammable materials in trains and for exercising vigil to prevent carrying of inflammable articles. Multi-media publicity campaign is also launched to educate the public about the hazards in carrying inflammable materials.
