The
total production of finished steel during April to August, 2003
has been provisionally estimated at 140.75 lakh tonnes as against
132.25 lakh tonnes during the corresponding period last year,
showing an increase of 6.4 per cent. The total production of
pig iron during this period was 22.30 lakh tonnes as against
21.80 lakh tonnes during the same period last year showing an
increasing of 2.29 per cent.
The
apparent consumption of finished steel items during these five
months was 118 lakh tonnes showing a growth of 2.1 per cent
as compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.
The consumption of pig iron during this period was also up by
2.97 per cent than the same period in 2002-2003. During the
period the export of steel has been estimated at 22 lakh tonnes
with an increase of 45.80 per cent as compared to the corresponding
period last year. Steel Authority of India Ltd. (SAIL) and Rashtriya
Ispat Nigam Ltd. (RINL) exported 83,000 tonnes and 45,000 tonnes
of saleable steel respectively during August 2003.
