GROWTH OF CORPORATE SECTOR DURING JULY, 2003

During the month of July, 2003, 2483 companies were registered in India under the Companies Act, 1956 as against 1932 companies registered during the corresponding month of the previous year and 2382 companies during the previous month. Of the 2483 companies registered during the month, 2476 companies were limited by shares. The month-wise registration of new companies during 2002-03 and 2003-04 is charted below:

Besides 2476 companies limited by shares, seven companies were registered as guarantee companies during the month of July, 2003. The total authorised capital of the companies limited by shares put together amounted to Rs. 462.6 crores. 2476 companies, limited by shares, registered during the month consist of 119 public limited companies with an authorised capital of Rs. 171.8 crores and 2357 private limited companies with an authorised capital of Rs. 290.8 crores.

The highest number of companies, limited by shares, registered during the month were reported from the State of Maharashtra (537) followed by the Union Territory of Delhi (445). The States of Tamilnadu (240), West Bengal (183), Andhra Pradesh (180), Karnataka (158) & Gujarat (146) also reported comparatively larger number of companies registered during the month. These 7 States together accounted for nearly 76 % per cent of the total number of companies registered durg the month.

 

The analysis of new registration by broad Industrial Classification during the month brings out that the highest number of companies were registered under the Industrial Classification " Manufacturing"( 752) followed by "Financing, Insurance, Real Estate and Business Services" (684) and "Wholesale and Retail trade, Restaurants & Hotels" (537). The other Classification along with number of companies registered are Construction (188), Community Social and Personal Services (152), Transport, Storage and Communication (104), Agriculture &Allied Activities (44) and Mining & Quarrying (15).

Of the Non- Government companies, two hundred and ten each with authorised capital of Rs.50 lakhs or above, were registered during the month of July , 2003 as against 154 in the previous month and 120 in July , 2002.

Seventy one companies have reportedly ceased functioning during July, 2003 either by going into liquidation or their names having been struck off under section 560 of the Companies Act. The number of such companies in the previous month was 82. Out of 71 such companies 17 were Public Limited companies and 54 were Private Limited. Of these companies 34 belonged to Madhya Pradesh, 14 to Tamil Nadu, 10 to West Bengal, 4 to Delhi, 3 each to Gujrat and Orissa, 2 to Kranataka and 1 to Haryana. Broad Industrial Classification wise, out of 71 companies, 23 belonged to Finance, Insurance Real estate & Business services, 20 to Manufacturing, 14 to Wholesale and Retail trade, Restaurants & Hotels, 7 to Construction, 3 each to Agriculture & Allied Activities and Transport, storage and Communication and 1 to Mining and Quarrying . Taking into consideration information relating to registration, liquidation / striking off etc. of companies, the number of companies at work on 31.07.2003 is indicated below.
