DoT SIGNS MoU WITH MTNL AND TCIL
The Department of
Telecom has signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for 2003-04
with Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) and Telecommunication
Consultants India Limited (TCIL) separately. The MoUs were signed
last evening by Shri Vinod Vaish, Secretary, Department of Telecom,
Shri Narinder Sharma, CMD, MTNL and Shri G.D.Gaiha, CMD, TCIL.
MTNL, a Navaratna
PSU, proposes to induct wireless in local loop (WLL) and cellular
mobile capacity of about 5 lakhs during the coming year as compared
to 3.20 lakhs during 2002-03 in its area of operation in Delhi
and Mumbai. MTNL also proposes to further reduce the fault rates,
expedite clearance of faults and provision of telephone connections
by modernizing the network. MTNL has plans to induct smart card
based payphones and wideband services including audio, video,
etc. in early 2003-04.
TCIL, a 100 per cent
Government owned Miniratna PSU, has achieved "Excellent"
rating consistently since 1991-92. Its telecom project operations
are spread over more than 50 countries in Asia, Middle East and
Africa. The company has been consistently paying dividends since
its inception in 1978 with interim dividend of 125 per cent declared
for 2002-03. The company has targeted a turnover of Rs.980 crore.
