UDYOG EXPO 2003 – FOCUS ON NORTH-EAST
Dr. C.P.Thakur, Union Minister for Small
Scale Industries and Department of Development of North-East Region
has emphasised the need for encouraging organic farming in north
east region so that it could be profitably marketed in other countries
and also at home. Speaking at an exclusive exhibition of products
from north east "Udyog Expo – 2003 : Focus on North East"
here today, he said improving connectivity in the region is his
Ministry’s top priority. Referring to the excellent craftsmanship
in the region, he said that proper encouragement should be provided
to marketing of cane and bamboo products. He appreciated the initiatives
of National Small Industries Corporation Ltd. (NSIC) to boost market
potential of small enterprises and pointed out that training of
people from north east in crafts and computer should be strengthened.
Dr. Thakur suggested that textile products of the region should
adapt to changing fashion trends so that it could be profitably
sold in different parts of the country. The Minister also felicitated
the exhibitors participating in the Expo.
The week long exhibition
comes to an end tomorrow. It has been organised by the NSIC. The
display spread over an area of 1500 sq. mtr. has offered ample
opportunities for this region to market their goods and project
their capabilities. A large number of business visitors have helped
the craftsmen to personally interact with them and initiate new
business opportunities. It has also helped them observe new solutions,
compare new products, uncover new ideas and interact with the
large number of delegates.
Products on display
include processed food, bamboo handicrafts, cane furniture, jewellery,
handloom and moonga silk. Live demonstration of weaving of loom
and moonga silk has also been organised. About 44 participants
from north east region are taking part in the exhibition. NSIC
is not charging any participation fee from the units coming to
display their goods/technologies at this platform. In addition
NSIC is offering 75 per cent subsidy on freight of goods from
north east.
NSIC acts as a facilitator
to promote small industries and holds such exhibition regularly.
It has devised a number of innovative programmes to support SSIs
in their marketing efforts which include market information &
trade leads, supplier rating accreditation, consortia marketing
& brand building, exports of products & projects among
others.
