TRADITIONAL SYSTEM OF MEDICINE IS CHEAP, ACCESSIBLE AND PEOPLE FRIENDLY – SMT. SWARAJ

Minister for Health & Family Welfare Smt. Sushma Swaraj has said that for traditional system of medicine to succeed amongst the people, it was extremely important for the Ayurvedic practitioners to believe in its inherent strength. In the given situation, the practitioners of Ayurveda would have to brand image their tools and methods of treatment by making the people believe that this system of medicine was cheap, accessible and provided an ever-lasting solution for chronic ailments and diseases. Ayurveda treatment has survived the test of time, Smt. Swaraj said due to the inherent cultural strengths of the system. It is perhaps one of the few treatments modes that has survived being captive to technological tools. The Minister stated this while delivering the Convocation Address of the Rashtriya Ayurveda Vidyapeeth here today.

Elaborating further, the Minister said Ayurveda believed in evaluating the sensitivity of human pulse. Through this examination, any practitioner could diagnose any ailment. Under the modern medical systems, the Minister said not much importance was being given to this method of treatment. Treatment today is more machine-driven. Under the given situation, any Ayurvedic practitioner could take the help of clinical diagnosis through tests to reaffirm their ability in treating patients through the traditional modes.

Highlighting the popularity and acceptability of the Indian System of Medicine abroad, Smt. Swaraj said, the acceptability came from the belief in the method of treatment and the people-friendly dosage. It was perhaps a challenge today to devise ways and means by which the cost of treatment for chronic diseases could be brought down by believing in Ayurvedic mode. It was the responsibility of the new generation of Ayurvedic practitioners to popularize the treatment methods for ailments concerning the kidney, heart, diabetes and other chronic diseases. On the occasion the Minister also gave away degrees to the students who had completed their courses from the Institute. Smt. Swaraj also announced an increase of Rs.2000/- per month from the current level of Rs.7,000/- per month to Rs.9,000/- for students who were undergoing training in the two-year Course conducted by the Institute.
