SHRI ADVANI TO LAY FOUNDATION STONE OF INDIA EXPOSITION MART

The Ministry of Textiles is setting up ‘India Exposition Mart’ to provide a state-of-the-art international marketing facility exclusively for the cottage sector. A company under the title ‘India Exposition Mart Ltd.’ has already been established to undertake the execution of the project. Approximately 45 acres site has been earmarked at the six-lane express way at Greater NOIDA.

The Deputy Prime Minister, Shri L.K.Advani, will lay the foundation stone of the project on March 28, 2003 at 10.00 a.m. The Minister of Textiles, Shri Kashiram Rana, will preside over the function and the Minister of Commerce & Industry, and Law & Justice, Shri Arun Jaitly, will be the Guest of Honour. The Minister of State for Textiles, Shri Basanagouda R. Patil and the Minister of State for Human Resource Development, Shri Ashok Pradhan will also participate.

India has a vast production base for handicrafts, handlooms, jute and silk. The growth in these sectors has been phenomenal in terms of employment and foreign exchange earnings. The export from these sectors is approximately US$2800 million (about Rs.13,160 crore) during 2001-02.

The need for setting up a permanent contact point for the cottage sector has been strongly felt in view of the changing marketing scenario. The ambitious project for setting up the exposition mart was conceived by the Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts, and the Committee of Secretaries approved the concept. The detailed feasibility study was undertaken by M/s. Pricewaterhouse Coopers Ltd.
