STATION
The Narora Atomic
Power Station has bagged the Industrial Safety Award for 2002,
in the case of nuclear power plants. The Atomic Energy Regulatory
Board (AERB) Award for heavy water plants went to the Heavy Water
Plant at Tuticorin. The AERB Award for other production units
went to the Indian Rare Earth’s Limited, Manavalakurichi.
Commending the units
for winning the awards, the Chairman AERB Prof. S P Sukhatme said,
safety record of units of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE)
has been found to be much higher than the units comparable, outside
DAE. There were 143 cases of accidents involving workers in 2002,
compared to 243 in 1999, 211 in 2000 and 172 in 2001.
The atomic power
stations at Tarapore, Narora and Kaiga as well as the heavy water
plants at Hazira and Tuticorin achieved the distinction of no-injury
record during the period. The Heavy Water Plant at Tuticorin crossed
another milestone of having the longest accident-free period of
3681 days.
