JAITLEY RAISES ISSUE OF IT PROFESSIONALS WITH MALAYSIAN MINISTER

Shri Arun Jaitley, Union Minister of Commerce & Industry and Law & Justice, today expressed the country’s deep anguish over the treatment meted out recently to Indian IT professionals in Malaysia when the Malaysian Minister for Entrepreneurial Development, Mr. Dato’ Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz called on him here this afternoon along with other members of his delegation. Shri Jaitley pointed out that not only was the number very large, but practically all of them had valid travel documents. The Minister was specially concerned about the defacing of the documents and the maltreatment to which they were subjected. Shri Dipak Chatterjee, Commerce Secretary, was also present at the meeting along with Shri Vinay Bansal, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Commerce & Industry. The Malaysian Minister tried to explain that the exercise was not per se directed against Indians but was part of an ongoing drive against illegal immigrants.

Some bilateral trade issues such as early accreditation of abattoirs also briefly figured in the discussions. The matter relating to India’s participation in the Sudan oil project through ONGC Videsh had been resolved, it was indicated during the discussions.
