The total production
of finished steel during April 2002 to January 2003 has been
provisionally estimated at 26.6 million tonnes as against the
production of 25.2 million tonnes during the same period last
year showing an increase of 5.8 per cent. The total production
of pig iron during this period has been 4.3 million tonnes as
against 3.3 million tonnes during the same period of the previous
year showing an increase of 30 per cent.
During these
10 months the apparent consumption of finished steel items in
the country was 23 million tonnes, 4 per cent higher than the
same period last year. The consumption of pig iron during this
period was up by 22.6 per cent.
The export
of steel during the first 10 months of this fiscal has been
estimated at 34 lakh tonnes, an increase of 35 per cent compared
to the corresponding period last year.
