OVER TWO CRORE RUPEES FOR REHABILITATION OF DESTITUTE CHILDREN

The
Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has sanctioned over
two crore rupees for rehabilitation of children rendered destitute
due to communal roits in Gujarat. These include orphan and single
parent children. Stating this in a written reply in the Lok Sabha
today, the Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment
Dr. Sanjay Paswan said that a rehabilitation project has for this
purpose been assigned to the Self Employed Women’s Association
(SEWA) under the Prime Minister’s package. He said that sixty
lakh rupees have so far been released to the SEWA during the current
financial year in this regard. The Minister said that 38 children
were orphaned and 172 became single parent children in communal
riots in the state. Dr. Paswan said that 449 children were orphaned
and 1309 became single parent children during the devastating
earthquake in Gujarat last year. He said that the Foster Parents
Scheme, which was earlier implemented in six Gujarat cities, has
now been extended to all earthquake affected areas of the state.
Dr. Paswan said that monthly assistance for maintenance has been
revised from Rs. 350/- to Rs. 500/- per child. He said that the
Childline Service, a toll free service which can be accessed by
children in distress or any adult on their behalf, has been set
up in various earthquake affected areas of the state.
