The Ministry of
Road Transport and Highways does not compile accident and casualty
data for other countries and hence inter-country comparison
is not possible.
A Working Group
on Road Accidents, Injury Prevention and Control set up by Planning
Commission in May, 2000 had studied this aspect and concluded
that ‘it is difficult to make comparisons between countries
because often the information is not available to allow for
all the differences in traffic and travel conditions’.
Some of the
important steps being taken by the Government besides highway
design to check the road accidents in the country are as under
:
- Assistance for setting up
of Driving Training Schools.
- Provision of refresher training
to drivers of heavy motors vehicles.
- Publicity campaign on road
safety awareness through audio-visual-print media.
- Grants-in-aid to voluntary
organisations for administering road safety programmes.
- Encouraging use of simulators
in driver’s training.
- Institution of National Award
for voluntary organisations/individuals for outstanding
work in the field of road safety.
- Organising All India Essay
Competition on road safety for school children with a view
to create awareness.
- Tightening of fitness norms
for transport vehicles.
- Widening/improvement of roads
etc.

Road Transport and Highways, Maj. Gen. (Retd.) B.C. Khanduri

Sabha today.
