SHRI DHINDSA UNDERLINES THE NEED TO IMPROVE MILK YIELD


Shri S.S. Dhindsa, Union Minister for Chemicals & Fertilizers has expressed concern at the low milk yields obtaining in the country. He said although India ranks first in the world in milk production, the per cattle milk yield is very low. On an average, the milk yield of a cow is 445 Kg. and buffalo is 810 Kg. per annum.

Inaugurating the Cattle Feed Plant and Milk Chilling Centre of Indian Potash Limited at Sikandrabad, Bulandshahar today Shri Dhindsa said that majority of the farmers, particularly in North India, are still feeding their cattle on traditional feeds which do not contain the necessary ingredients of balanced nutrition. In southern states, he said the condition of milk animals was much better as farmers were feeding balanced cattle feed to their animals being aware of the advantage of the same.

Shri Dhindsa said that since area under green fodder is shrinking due to increasing population and urbanisation, it has become imperative to feed animals on high energy balanced cattle feed in order to improve animal health and milk yield. He said that in response to the farmer’s need, Indian Potash Limited has set up a modern " Cattle Feed Plant" and " Milk Chilling Centre" which will greatly benefit the dairy farmers by providing quality cattle feed at most reasonable rates. He expressed satisfaction that the Plant will also provide livestock Development Services for better breed, health and feed management which will help the farmers in maximising their milk yield and income.

Dr. Chattrapal Singh, Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilizers also graced the occasion as a special guest of honour.
