Shri S.S. Dhindsa,
Union Minister for Chemicals & Fertilizers has expressed
concern at the low milk yields obtaining in the country. He
said although India ranks first in the world in milk production,
the per cattle milk yield is very low. On an average, the milk
yield of a cow is 445 Kg. and buffalo is 810 Kg. per annum.
Inaugurating
the Cattle Feed Plant and Milk Chilling Centre of Indian Potash
Limited at Sikandrabad, Bulandshahar today Shri Dhindsa said
that majority of the farmers, particularly in North India, are
still feeding their cattle on traditional feeds which do not
contain the necessary ingredients of balanced nutrition. In
southern states, he said the condition of milk animals was much
better as farmers were feeding balanced cattle feed to their
animals being aware of the advantage of the same.
Shri Dhindsa
said that since area under green fodder is shrinking due to
increasing population and urbanisation, it has become imperative
to feed animals on high energy balanced cattle feed in order
to improve animal health and milk yield. He said that in response
to the farmer’s need, Indian Potash Limited has set up a modern
" Cattle Feed Plant" and " Milk Chilling Centre"
which will greatly benefit the dairy farmers by providing quality
cattle feed at most reasonable rates. He expressed satisfaction
that the Plant will also provide livestock Development Services
for better breed, health and feed management which will help
the farmers in maximising their milk yield and income.

Singh, Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilizers also
graced the occasion as a special guest of honour.
